FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19: INDIA AT ITS BEST SO FAR

After the COVID-19 outbreak in the world, it has been declared as the public health emergency of international concern. Today we are sitting near the tips of an iceberg, it is certain that the spread of infectious diseases will be much faster than ever before. thanks to the government's commitment and people’s devotion, the new cases have started to decline in China. Still the virus has managed to spread across the borders, the governments and people are taking extraordinary measures to limit the further transmission of the virus and to reduce the number of infected people around the globe. WHO has declared the COVID-19 outbreak an international health emergency not because China has responded poorly but due to strained, fragile and choked health systems of many developing countries. insufficient public health infrastructure, frail health monitoring systems weak laboratory networking and poor health information management make developing countries highly prone to disease outbreaks . as of today more than 57 countries worldwide have reported cases of COVID-19.
China is defeating the COVID-19 for three reasons: strong government commitment and intervention, efficient health services and innovative diagnostic platforms which are lacking in developing countries. Chinese government took stringent measures including closing down the Wuhan city and adjacent areas and putting the 51 billion people under quarantine. The pathogen was identified within three days, virus detection kits were developed to diagnose patients, to cap it all the Chinese government is mounting all-out efforts to stop the outbreaks. But the countries like Italy and France are not able to fight against the virus as efficiently as China, and it turned out to be disastrous for these states. In less than three weeks, the coronavirus has overloaded the health care all over northern Italy. If not even hospitals of the developing countries with the worlds best health care risk becoming triage wards, then the countries like India, Pakistan Sri Lanka which are still developing and even failed to avail the basic personal protective equipments (PPE) such as masks and gloves, as these countries have limited indigenous production and rely on import and are lacking technical expertise and advanced biomedical facilities, especially biosafety level-3 and 4 laboratories, which are essential for novel pathogen detection are still preventing against the COVID-19.
India which is a densely populated country has managed to prevent itself successfully from COVID-19 so far. The Indian government is coming forward to fight against COVID-19 with stringent measures including visa restrictions and other travel restrictions on a global level. Indian government has banned traveling from the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech, Republic, Denmark, Italy, France, Spain, Sweden), Turkey and United Kingdom. All existing visas issued to nationals of any country except those issued to diplomates, official passports holders those in UN / International organizations, those on employment, and who had not entered India yet, stand suspended w.e.f. 1200GMT on March 13,2020 till April 15,2020. On a local level governments have taken measures to empower the citizens with the right information and taking precautions as per the advisories being issued by the ministry of health & family welfare. All the schools, colleges and cinema halls are shut in most of the Indian states till March 31st. The government also ordered disinfecting in all the public places, including government, private offices and shopping malls compulsory. Steps are being taken for sanitization of public transport vehicles and terminals. Government is also planning for displaying public health messages on public transport vehicles, bus stops, etc.
Not only the government but the people of India are actively supporting the fight against coronavirus. They have become more conscious about their hygiene and cleanliness. They are washing hands more frequently with soap and water, wearing masks when they are outdoors, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, staying at home and avoiding not so important public gatherings and so on and so far. People are trying to clean up the places around them which is not seen usually on Indian streets. People are themselves spreading awareness amongst each other about the do’s and don’ts and supporting the fight against COVID-19 in their own ways.
Further individuals and companies are also coming up with innovative solutions and developed technologies, bioinformatics, datasets, apps for diagnosis, etc that can be leveraged for strengthening the fight against the corona. COVID-19 has definitely made a change in people’s hygiene habits. COVID-19 is leaning towards a good chance in the society. If people stay habitual to these habits of hygiene and cleanliness then such diseases can be prevented in the future.
