TARA DEVI MANDIR TREK : A SPIRITUAL THRILLER
In the beautiful woods of a small town in Himachal Pradesh resides the heavenly deity, Maa Tara. Himachal Pradesh is well known for its mesmerizing beauty, lush green forests and of course it is land of splendid mountains, a pristine place which feeds and provides solace to the mind and soul, a pious land which is associated with the supernatural . The enigma of a place which attracts people from every nook and corner of the world . Along being praised for its natural beauty Himachal is also referred as the "Dev-Bhoomi" which means the "abode of God." One can say that Himachal is the smaller and diversified version of India because various deities residing in this heavenly place .
One of the most praised deity of Himachal is Maa Tara Devi. Tara devi temple is located in the mid of the thick forest of oak and rhododendron on Tarab hills in Shimla Himachal Pradesh. This temple is famous for its divine beauty and spiritual peace. Tara Devi Temple is situated at a height of 1851 meters above sea level. It is about 11 kilometers away from Shimla. Tara Devi Temple is accessible by rail, bus and car, but the best way to enjoy the magnificent beauty of the place is to follow the path of the Tarab trek .
HISTORY
The history of tara devi temple dates back about 250 years ago. It is believed that Maa Tara Devi was brought to Himachal from West Bengal. A King from the sen dynasty of Bengal once visited Himachal. He was in the habit of carrying the idol of his family in the upper torso of his arm. One day while hunting in the dark and dense forests of Juggar, Raja Bhupendra Sen fell asleep and had a dream; in the dream he saw his family deity Ma Tara and her consorts Dwarpal Bhairav and Lord Hanuman requesting him to unveil them before the common economically dis- empowered populace.
Inspired by his dream, Raja Bhupendra Sen donated 50 bighas of land and sponsored the construction of a temple in the land. The first Idol was made of wood which was installed in accordance with Vaishnav traditions. Later generations of the Sen Dynasty gradually improved the structure. Raja Balbir Sen commissioned the 'Ashtadhatu' deity which is still seen today.
THE TUNNEL WAY
The trek start from taradevi railway station and runs up to the temple. You may continue the trek from the jungle above the railway station or from the railway track which will include tunnel 91 of the Kalka Shimla railway line. This is the second longest tunnel of the track 992 meters. There is a long story behind this tunnel too It is believed that as this tunnel was being built under the residence of a powerful goddes , the workers were scared of working there as they didn’t want to face the goddess’ wrath. Work had to be stopped for a little while when a breathing pipe was mistaken for a large snake sent by the goddess herself. The tunnel is very long and a bit narrow so its tough to cross it. You must ask station master before crossing it to assure that there is no train coming and you have plenty of time to cross it . According to locals many people committed suicide in that tunnel and some got accidently killed by the train while they passing through the tunnel . That tunnel is a bit haunted but would give you plenty of thrill for sure . After passing the tunnel the path continues along the railway trek and then you have to climb the hill covered by dense forest of oak and rhododendron to reach your destination .
THE JUNGLE WAY
This way totally involve a narrow path through a dense forest . One has to hike for about two hours to reach the temple . Through the dense forest of the pinewood, oak, Rhododendron , rich in flora and fauna, passing through the green meadows on the way, it is one of the most beautiful walks around Shimla. The meandering foot path, climbs gently to the top of the hill and it turns to be a tireless climb. On the way to the top there are various places which offer wide panoramic views of Shimla town with the Himalayas at back. Atmosphere of the hike rejuvenates the nature lovers and common tourists visiting this sacred temple, which provides excellent views. Pine – scented mild breeze on the way refreshes people beyond expectations. The trek starts from tara devi bus stand that is base of the mountain when you reach their you will realize that the world might have taken a leap of ten years, but the trees and the jungle still stand just the same. They stand tall, proud, looking down on all of us . The jungle beckons you . The total distance of the trek is 4 kms and most of it is uphill, and through a jungle trail. This trek can be undertaken around the year. Just be careful of the running streams in monsoon and the snowy trails in winter.
On the whole trail will just see a handful of people otherwise it will just be the jungle and you . Not a soul around and almost pin drop silence. The first stretch of half an hour or so is a gradual slope that circles the mountain. Before you reach the half way mark the trail becomes more steeper, and a little tiresome . After you will complete half way , you will see the remains of a rain shelter with a broken hand pump . After walking a bit you will soon reach a place where you will see four mobile towers on the top of mountain . The view from that point will take you to another world , from there you can get the glimpse of whole Shimla . The jungle in this last stretch is mesmerizing, there are pockets which get very little sun and have huge ferns, in deep greens growing here . After this a walk of few more minutes through the woods and you will reach your destination . The jungle is fierce and interesting so definitely a place to visit .
SHIV KUTIYA
After visiting tara devi temple and tasting the divinity in the air you may now move further to Shiv Kutiya . A small temple of lord shiva located under the tara devi temple in the dense forest gives you the feel of Lord Shiva actually residing in Kailash. The temperature of the temple is naturally lower than other parts of the jungle. It is believed that many years ago a saint who used to meditate here He stayed here even at the worst of temperature , be it deepest of winters he could be found only in a langot with ash smeared all over him. He was believed to be from South India, and a qualified engineer from Merchant Navy. The only thing you will sense there is the extreme peace and divinity in the air .Temple has the Samadhi of one more saint who meditated here. There is a small room along the temple where you will see a log burning continuously most probably called baba g ka dhoona . It is believed that the babaji is in mediation here, and the ash from the log is supposed to be prasad for his followers. This temple is a feast for all the Lord Shiva bhakt .
