The Mystery of Roopkund Lake In the heart of the majestic Himalayas, nestled amidst towering peaks and dense forests, lay the enigmatic Roopkund Lake. Its serene beauty masked a chilling secret that had baffled explorers, historians, and scientists alike for centuries. Legend spoke of a tragic event that befell a group of pilgrims traveling through the treacherous terrains to pay homage to the mountain deities. They were led by a powerful yet arrogant queen named Rani Maanya. Ignoring the warnings of the local tribes about the wrath of the gods, she ventured forth, accompanied by her loyal subjects and a troupe of soldiers. As they approached Roopkund, an unexpected storm unleashed its fury upon them. Blinded by snow and disoriented by the howling winds, the pilgrims lost their way. In their desperate attempt to seek shelter, they stumbled upon the frozen lake, believing it to be a safe haven. However, fate had other plans. As they attempted to cross the icy expanse, the fragile surface gave way beneath their weight. Screams of terror pierced the eerie silence as men, women, and children plunged into the icy depths. The few who managed to cling to the edges perished from hypothermia or injuries sustained in the fall. When spring arrived, the villagers discovered the grisly scene—a lake filled with human skeletons, eerily preserved by the icy waters. The tragedy became a haunting tale, passed down through generations, shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Centuries later, in 1942, a British forest ranger stumbled upon Roopkund Lake during a routine expedition. To his horror, he discovered hundreds of skeletons protruding from the melting ice, perfectly preserved in their final moments of agony. The discovery sparked international interest, leading to numerous theories and speculations about the origin of the skeletons. Archaeologists, anthropologists, and forensic experts descended upon Roopkund, determined to unravel the mystery. Carbon dating revealed that the skeletons dated back to the 9th century, debunking theories of recent casualties. Further analysis of the remains suggested that the victims hailed from different regions, raising questions about their identity and purpose. Various theories emerged over the years, ranging from an ancient army caught in a blizzard to a group of pilgrims succumbing to a deadly epidemic. However, conclusive evidence remained elusive, deepening the enigma surrounding Roopkund Lake. As decades passed, the mystery of Roopkund became a subject of fascination and speculation. Tourists and adventurers flocked to witness the Skeleton Lake, captivated by its haunting beauty and chilling history. Yet, the true story of the ill-fated pilgrims remains buried beneath the icy waters, a testament to the unforgiving power of nature and the enduring allure of Himachal Pradesh's mystical landscapes.

Himachal Pradesh sets itself apart as India’s outdoor adventure playground through its varied topography and stunning natural beauty. It is a land of mysteries with so much to explore and so much to discover about this humble abode of snow. Some things though, are quite strange and intriguing about this state, and one of them is Malana valley. Isolated from the rest of the world lies a solitary village in Malana nala, which is the side valley of Parvati valley. Malana also known as Malana village is located in Kullu valley. Malana is one of the not-so popular places of India that are present silently in all their glory. The peaks of Chanderkhani and Deo Tibba shadow the village. It is situated on a remote plateau by the side of the torrential Malana river. You may also call Malana, a village of taboos as it has been hiding several scandalous stories since ages . Malana has its own lifestyle and social structure and people are strict in following their customs. According to the local people of Malana , Jamlu rishi (sage) inhabited this place and made rules and regulations. The locals claim it to be one of the oldest democracies of the world with a well-organized parliamentary system, guided by their devta (deity) Jamlu rishi. Touch me not Villagers believe that they have pure Aryan genes and that they are descendants of Alexander the Great. The Malanese people are extremely strict about the rule of not touching or coming in contact with any outsiders, on the off-chance of getting touched they either run for a bath or charge you a fine! Not just the people, but their belongings, walls they live in, everything comes under a no-touching zone for the visitors! Apart from this, they consider their language "Kanashi" and their temples too sacred for any outsiders to visit. However, the people are known to be friendly, despite their strict rules. This overwhelming sense of seclusion is important to how the Malana community has evolved, shunning the outside world. A lonely existence in a tangle of high mountains meant that Malana once had total freedom, even from government. For very long, its villagers didn’t mingle with other Kullu villages; its village council didn’t recognise the role of the Indian state; it resisted all external influence. They are very sensitive towards their natural resources so hammering nails onto trees is prohibited , only dry twigs and leaves can be carried out of the forests and wood cannot be burned in the forests. Similarly, hunting of wild animals is not allowed without the permission of the village council that too only during specific periods of the year. In case wild animals attack the herds of sheep and goats of the villagers the hunters are sent from the village to the pastures to kill them. And if a bear is killed, the hunter is rewarded but has to deposit the fur in the Bhandara of the Devta. Another peculiar yet true rule is that the Police intervention isn't allowed in their system. If anybody needs the help of police, the person must pay a fine of Rs 1000 to the village council. The marriage of Malanese people is pre-arranged in their adolescence. The bride is supposed to run behind her husband and her in-law while holding a torch as part of their customs, on their wedding night. A man can have multiple wives and in case he divorces one of his wives, he must help her financially. However, quite similar to the rest of the Indian traditions, anybody who marries an outsider will be banished from the village forever. Malana Cream We know it’s more like an open secret and the village is actually famous for this very feature. The place grows the finest weed in India. Malana is famous for ‘Malana cream’, a strain of Cannabis hashish, which has high oil content and an intensely fragrant aroma. But did you know that Malana cream is also the most expensive hashish in the Amsterdam menu? Malana has drawn a lot of hashish lovers from all around the world. Although it is declared illegal by the government of India. The Malana Cream is known worldwide for its high quality hash. In fact, hash is so common and sold out in the open that there would be no surprise even if a child offers it to you . Malana cream has won the Best Hashish title twice, in 1994 and 1996, at High Times magazine’s Cannabis Cup . Malana Trek This place is also apt for all adventure lovers since the route to Malana is famous for trekking. The temples in Malana - the Jamadagni Temple and the Shrine of Renuka Devi - serve as major attractions of the village. A King from the sen dynasty of Bengal once visited Himachal. He was in the habit of carrying the idol of his family in the upper torso of his arm. One day while hunting in the dark and dense forests of Juggar, Raja Bhupendra Sen fell asleep and had a dream; in the dream he saw his family deity Ma Tara and her consorts Dwarpal Bhairav and Lord Hanuman requesting him to unveil them before the common economically dis- empowered populace. Inspired by his dream, Raja Bhupendra Sen donated 50 bighas of land and sponsored the construction of a temple in the land. The first Idol was made of wood which was installed in accordance with Vaishnav traditions. Later generations of the Sen Dynasty gradually improved the structure. Raja Balbir Sen commissioned the 'Ashtadhatu' deity which is still seen today. THE TUNNEL WAY The trek start from taradevi railway station and runs up to the temple. You may continue the trek from the jungle above the railway station or from the railway track which will include tunnel 91 of the Kalka Shimla railway line. This is the second longest tunnel of the track 992 meters. There is a long story behind this tunnel too It is believed that as this tunnel was being built under the residence of a powerful goddes , the workers were scared of working there as they didn’t want to face the goddess’ wrath. Work had to be stopped for a little while when a breathing pipe was mistaken for a large snake sent by the goddess herself. The tunnel is very long and a bit narrow so its tough to cross it. You must ask station master before crossing it to assure that there is no train coming and you have plenty of time to cross it . According to locals many people committed suicide in that tunnel and some got accidently killed by the train while they passing through the tunnel . That tunnel is a bit haunted but would give you plenty of thrill for sure . After passing the tunnel the path continues along the railway trek and then you have to climb the hill covered by dense forest of oak and rhododendron to reach your destination . THE JUNGLE WAY This way totally involve a narrow path through a dense forest . One has to hike for about two hours to reach the temple . Through the dense forest of the pinewood, oak, Rhododendron , rich in flora and fauna, passing through the green meadows on the way, it is one of the most beautiful walks around Shimla. The meandering foot path, climbs gently to the top of the hill and it turns to be a tireless climb. On the way to the top there are various places which offer wide panoramic views of Shimla town with the Himalayas at back. Atmosphere of the hike rejuvenates the nature lovers and common tourists visiting this sacred temple, which provides excellent views. Pine – scented mild breeze on the way refreshes people beyond expectations. The trek starts from tara devi bus stand that is base of the mountain when you reach their you will realize that the world might have taken a leap of ten years, but the trees and the jungle still stand just the same. They stand tall, proud, looking down on all of us . The jungle beckons you . The total distance of the trek is 4 kms and most of it is uphill, and through a jungle trail. This trek can be undertaken around the year. Just be careful of the running streams in monsoon and the snowy trails in winter. On the whole trail will just see a handful of people otherwise it will just be the jungle and you . Not a soul around and almost pin drop silence. The first stretch of half an hour or so is a gradual slope that circles the mountain. Before you reach the half way mark the trail becomes more steeper, and a little tiresome . After you will complete half way , you will see the remains of a rain shelter with a broken hand pump . After walking a bit you will soon reach a place where you will see four mobile towers on the top of mountain . The view from that point will take you to another world , from there you can get the glimpse of whole Shimla . The jungle in this last stretch is mesmerizing, there are pockets which get very little sun and have huge ferns, in deep greens growing here . After this a walk of few more minutes through the woods and you will reach your destination . The jungle is fierce and interesting so definitely a place to visit . SHIV KUTIYA After visiting tara devi temple and tasting the divinity in the air you may now move further to Shiv Kutiya . A small temple of lord shiva located under the tara devi temple in the dense forest gives you the feel of Lord Shiva actually residing in Kailash. The temperature of the temple is naturally lower than other parts of the jungle. It is believed that many years ago a saint who used to meditate here He stayed here even at the worst of temperature , be it deepest of winters he could be found only in a langot with ash smeared all over him. He was believed to be from South India, and a qualified engineer from Merchant Navy. The only thing you will sense there is the extreme peace and divinity in the air .Temple has the Samadhi of one more saint who meditated here.
